Reflection on videos of graduates

Nine videos from graduates, Rebecca Pierotti Baulderstone, Cameron Holoubek, Mario Russo, Jo O’Brien, Brad Brown, Chris Maiolo, Simon Keith, Tim Viner-Simth and John Dyson do inspire me a lot. These people are from different parties and different background, but they are all civil engineers in common.

We may think civil engineers are just sitting in the office and doing calculation for making sure the stability of structures. These nine videos, however, tell me that civil engineers have different jobs and roles depend on which sector they are focus on. Calculating is not the only thing they have to do.

In a project team there are so many professionals such as design architecture, landscaping architecture, accountants, maybe sometimes services providers, city council and civil engineers, which are site engineers and consultant engineers. They combine their knowledge together to build, enhance or renovate some structures. Therefore, communication is always the most important part of a project which all of the graduates have mentioned clearly in their own foo tape.

I think the video taken by Mr. John Dyson inspire me the most. Because he just mention as the times gone, engineers is more concern about sustainability and the aid of computer. These points may not be consider in the past, but now they are vital part of civil engineers work. To solving problem easier we got computer and the code of sustainability help the next generation to have a better environment.

I just realize calculating is just a tip of iceberg of a civil engineer’s job. They have to consider almost everything will or may happen to make their project works. Keeping good communication with other experts to figure out a better solution for problems they meet. Civil engineer is an irreplaceable member in a team to make alter a better city for people.
